OnePlus 8 5G Review

OnePlus 8 5G Review

OnePlus 8 5G

OnePlus launched its OnePlus 8 series this year. This series has been launched with 5G network connectivity. Like last year, this year too the company has focused on performance and camera in its smartphone. However, this time OnePlus 8 Series has been introduced by the company with a punch-hole display design. Also, you will get to see the curved display feature in it. OnePlus always tries to make its smartphones with new innovations. For example, last year the company introduced a 90Hz display. This year too, the company has innovated with its devices, including fast wireless charging features, and IP-rated waterproofing.

OnePlus 8 is available in three storage options 6GB RAM + 128GB, 8GB RAM + 128GB and 8G RAM + 256GB. Its base model costs Rs 41,999, while 8GB RAM + 128GB costs Rs 44,999. Whereas, the price of 8GB RAM + 256GB variants is Rs 49,999. This phone is also available in three color options Glacial Green, Onyx Black, and Interstellar Glow. Keeping in mind the Indian users, the company has launched 6GB variants here. This variant has been launched only in India.

Would you like to spend more than Rs 40,000 for OnePlus 8 5G? Does it have all the features one would like to see in a premium flagship device? Can it challenge Samsung or Apple devices in the Indian market? Let us try to find the answer to these questions through this review.

What is new?

The company launched the OnePlus 7 Series last year. Many new features were also given in it. Later, OnePlus 7T replaced it with more features. What we got to see in this new OnePlus 8 5G is that its processor has been upgraded. OnePlus 8 uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC mobile platform which is 25 percent faster than the processor used in the previous model. Also, in this, we get dual-band 5G network support. However, the 5G network is not available in India but it can be a future-ready device for you.

Design

Now let's talk about the design of the phone. The look of OnePlus 8 is quite different from OnePlus 7T. It has a completely allied triple rear camera design. However, it also gets a camera bump. Also, the front panel has a punch-hole display panel on the upper left corner. This time the company has made the Nokia feature very goodbye. Additionally, the pop-up camera feature has also been removed. The punch-hole size in the upper left side panel is very low, which gives you a full view display. The earpiece and speaker are given in the upper chin of the phone. At the same time, the curved display is featured on the side, which has got users to experience in OnePlus 7 Pro or 7T Pro. OnePlus has retained its in-display fingerprint sensor in this series as well.

Talking about the back panel, the LED flashlight has been given below the triple rear camera set-up, below which the icon logo of OnePlus has been given. Also, the bottom side of the back panel also has ONEPLUS written in the new style. Glass design has been used in the front and back panels of the phone. The back panel of the phone is quite shiny, due to which the connections can come. Therefore, I will recommend that you keep the cover that comes with the phone. Due to the curved display and curved back panel, hands get a better grip. The bottom of the phone has a USB Type C port, SIM card slot, and speaker grill. The locking in it is 3.5mm jack and slot is not provided for microSD card.

Display

The phone has a 6.55-inch display panel that features a 90Hz refresh rate. The resolution of the display is given 2400 x 1080 pixels and the brightness level is given up to 402ppi. The aspect ratio of the phone's display is 20: 9. Also, the phone has a panel of Fluid AMOLED display. 3D Corning Gorilla Glass feature has been given for the protection of the display. The phone's display features reading mode, night mode, and vibrant color effects. The best thing that I found in its display is that one of the curved displays has been used and the other is the punch hole which has been aligned in the left corner. When you stream a video or play a game, this punch-hole is at the bottom. In this case, you will get the experience of a full view display. You will get better brightness on the display. Also, its colors are quite sparkling. The display supports HDR10 + with the help of which you can explore the content with better resolution and brightness.

Performance

OnePlus always tries to make its devices the best in terms of performance. Every year the company launches its device with a premium flagship processor. This time also the company has introduced its series with Snapdragon 865 SoC. LPDDR4X RAM is supported in it. Also, it has a UFS 3.2 storage feature. The phone runs on OnygenOS based on Android 10. To give power to the phone, a 4,300mAh battery has been provided, which comes with the Warp 30T Fast Charging feature.

Talking about performance, the phone runs very smoothly. I have played games like PUBG for 3 hours continuously on it and there is no problem with lagging anywhere. However, the device I am using is 12GB RAM. But, you will definitely enjoy using the phone. Whether you want to use streaming video or for gaming, you will get a very good experience.

Talking about the battery back-up of the phone, it takes 45 to 60 minutes to be fully charged. Once the phone is fully charged, after this you can run it for one day. However, if you are using it with a 90Hz refresh rate display, then the battery will be consumed soon.

You will also get a smooth experience in social media browsing. The best feature I found in it is that whether you are using the internet with mobile data or through WiFi, you get better network connectivity. The phone comes with WiFi 6 connectivity features, in which you can use WiFi and mobile hotspots simultaneously. That is, it has a WiFi sharing feature. You can also connect other devices to the phone by connecting it to WiFi. I connected my Echo Dot Input with it which was also working with WiFi. The phone has features like NFC, Dolby Atmos which offers better audio quality when gaming or browsing video content.

Camera

Now let's talk about the most important camera feature of the phone. It has the triple rear camera set-up similar to the OnePlus 7T. However, you will see a difference in the design of the camera. The phone has a 48MP Sony IMX586 primary sensor which comes with OIS, EIS support. The phone has an aperture of f / 1.75. Apart from this, the phone has a 16MP ultra-wide lens that comes with a 116-degree field of view. The aperture of f / 2.2 has been used on the phone. The phone has a 2MP macro sensor that comes with f / 2.4 aperture. A Dual LED flash feature has been provided in the rear camera.

The rear camera of the phone comes with multi autofocus (PDAF + CAF) support. This allows 4K quality video to be captured at 30 / 60fps. The phone's rear camera has a super-slow-motion feature that supports resolutions up to 1080p. The phone has an in-built video editor that supports super slow-mo video and time-lapse. You can also click the Ultra Shot HDR picture from the rear camera of the phone. Also, it has a Cine Vision video recording feature.

What I liked about the OnePlus 8 camera is that you can click the natural picture from it. For this, you have to select the phone's Pro mode. The Night Scape Mode feature is amazing. Pictures can be clicked with a lot of detail even in very low light. Features like autofocus, live focus (pro mode) have been provided in the phone. In macro lenses too, you will get a picture with a lot of detail. The camera on the phone is quite good.

Talking about the front or selfie camera, it has a 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor. HD quality video recording can also be done from its front camera. It also supports EIS as well. The front camera has auto fixed focus feature. It supports various features like Face Unlock, HDR, Screen Flash, and Face Retouching. Its front camera is great for social media uploading and video calling.

Our decision

We can call OnePlus 8 5G a better performer. A strong processor has been used on the phone. Also, in terms of camera, it is no less than a premium flagship device. The best thing that I found in this phone is that the performance and display feature of the phone has been given quite well. Also, the camera feature has not disappointed me. So in the price range of Rs 40,000, it can prove to be a future-ready device for you.
